Quality Control Problems,June 28, 2009
By Porousfrom Tallahassee, FL
"I bought this filter system based on the ConsumerReports.org review and rating. So far, I am disappointed. By the way, I do most of my own household plumbing and installations. I include this only as a skill level reference.
I had two Quality Control Problems: 3 out of the 4 push-to-connect fittings were installed with their collets. The other was not. I did not realize one was missing until I did a pressure/leak check and sprayed water everywhere. I cannot understand why only 3 of 4 were shipped installed. The missing one was in the bag with the screws and other mounting hardware. Even if people decide not to use the supplied cold water fitting and went with a compression fitting instead, they would still use the push-to-connect/collet with 1/4" OD tubing on the filter housing. It just doesn't make sense not to ship it installed.
The other is that the faucet leaks. Not from any of the fittings but from the faucet assembly itself. There is an invisible fracture where the mounting post meets the faucet housing. It took me over an hour to diagnose where the leak was coming from. I was only able to find it after removing the entire assembly from the sink. I tightened the hex nut just to the point that the faucet did not move (as per the instructions).
As you can tell from my and other reviews, the cheap plastic faucet that comes with the filter system is the weak link.
I cannot comment on the quality of the water yet."

Most Economical,June 5, 2009
By skinneyfrom GA
"Pros - It filters nicely. You can definitely taste the difference in the water.
Cons - Cheap construction. My first one is a couple years old and still working. My second one never worked right. I snapped the thin plastic dispenser when cleaning the third one and now it doesn't work."

poor construction,May 27, 2009
By cycleround
"The water tastes pretty good and the consumer reports test of the H2O quality are good. However, the design on the spigot arm is faulty. The "notch" for the O ring that allows the faucet arm to pivot is compromised every time you actuate the on/off lever. Consequently the weakness in the O ring notch caused my faucet to snap at the position. I fixed it with teflon tape and then a couple of months later the on/off plastic lever snapped. Now I must use some needle nose pliers to turn it on and off until I get a new filter. This all occurred within in about 9 months. Unfortunately I couldn't find my receipt. DON'T purchase this model!!!!!"

Replaced osmosis system,November 14, 2008
By 2soonoldtfrom Utah SLC
"The faucet on my reverse osmosis system began leaking after 15 years. To replace the faucet would cost the same or more than this entire system. I like that no water is waisted doing osmosis and flow rate to faucet is higher. The replacement filter cost is much less. I had to turn off the water supply and push the connections together a couple of times to stop leaks. Works fine for the two months since installing. Took me 2 hrs to install and fix leaks. Suggest testing water first to know what you want the filter to do. I'm using the Taste and odor filter that remove chlorine with charcoal. The filter container and the faucet are made of plastic like material. The faucet is white, the filter container is beige. If you have a designer kitchen you may want to spend more than this on the faucet alone."

Impending Disaster,October 9, 2008
By EJNATfrom Savannah
"They can be hard to install because of location, but careful layout so connections can be leak checked before mounting alleviates headaches. Water tastes absolutely fantastic and teeing to icemaker ensures your ice does not ruin taste. BUT!!! I've had two of these plastic cartridge holders bust over the years flooding house. This time I will look for one that has a lifetime expectancy (not the cartridge)."

not so bad,August 1, 2008
By argeefrom Vermont
"I understand the comments about installation but somewhere I ran across a review that suggested making absolutely sure the connections were deep enough. I did that, plumbed it in with the stuff it came with and no leaks. Yeah, it doesn't come with a filter but it's MUCH less expensive than the competition, as are the filters it uses, and Consumer Reports rates it a Best Buy."

Unobtrusive water filtering,April 28, 2008
By WitchDoctorfrom Marin County, CA
"We live in an area with otherwise excellent water- no nasty bugs or chemicals - but our tap water still tastes like tap water, if you know what I mean. We wanted to eliminate the weekly trips to the store for distilled water. Our municipal water is very clean, so we ruled out more complex filters. We also live in a dry area, so we ruled out reverse osmosis, which wastes 4 or more gallons for every gallon filtered. We just wanted a simple filter that would remove the chlorine and "off" tastes. We bought this unit based on a recent Consumer Reports review. It took me one hour to install, and I didn't swear once! The plug-in fittings are very secure and easy to install. You need to push them in about 1/2" to 3/4", farther than you'd think, for them to fully engage. This might be the reason other people had problems. Build quality is excellent, except for the plastic dispenser head, which feels cheap. That's a shame; the other parts are very well made, but the head is the one part that's visible above the sink. Come on, guys; I associate Sears with quality, that's why I buy so many Craftsman tools! We used the recommended #34373 "Premium Taste & Odor" filter. It's an extra $18, and it is sold separately. It would be nice to have it bundled. Water quality out of the unit is excellent; it has the same "neutral" taste we were used to having with our bottled distilled water. It saves us about $170 per year, and is much more convenient than driving to the store every week."

Works well,April 13, 2008
By JOHNinCAfrom San Francisco Bay Area, CA
"This filter comes highly rated by Consumer Reports and is inexpensive. We have found that this filter very effectively removes chlorine and off tastes from our water. This unit was not trivial to install, but I completed in in about 30 minutes. I did it using the included hardware, but my sink already had an existing hole so I didn't have to drill one. Once installed, it is very convienent to use. It's now been working for 9 months with no problems."

Bad review by consumer reports,February 29, 2008
By cighfrom Houston, Texas
"We bought this water filter by consumer reports' recommendation and are very disappointed. First, the water tastes worst than tap water. Second, it was a nightmare to instal...had to go to hardware store twice and still got leakage. Third, in less than one month after installing it the faucet broke. This is a plastic, thin and fragile faucet and it broke during normal operation. Strongly do not recommend it."

"I had heard great reviews for this product and at the relatively low cost and Consumer Reports ratings, I get it a shot in a non critical sink. My review is based on purchasing online. Here is what I've learned. 1. IT DOES NOT COME WITH A FILTER ELEMENT! You'll have to buy one separately with bumps the price up $16-18. 2. The amount of 1/4 rubber hose given is not generous so you should measure your setup and buy more before you install. I have about a foot left for a tight fit setup. 3. The hose connectors are of the "Quick Connect" type such as "John Guest Quick Connect Fittings" and so require water good water pressure to make the seal at all. If you have weak water pressure, all the fittings that come with the kit will be useless and leak all over the place. 4. The filtered water is only marginally better tasting than tap water to be frank. We have a double osmosis type as well on the main sink that tastes almost as good as bottled so I was disappointed. Overall, the product of relatively solid make. The kit also does come with everything you'll need including Teflon tape. But be warned, if you don't know how to use "Quick Connectors" you will literally be all wet."

"Right out of the box this was a disaster. There was no easy way to attach it to this to the plumbing. I went to the hardware store and purchased a collar like those used for ice makers. I installed the unit accordings to the insructions. When I turned the main water valve back on every single connection on the fiter shot out water."
