"I bought this vacuum after reviewing models through Consumer Reports. They rated this the best over so many others including Kirby, Dyson and Oreck. Those higher priced vacuums didn't clean as well on the tests. Very highly rated for picking up pet hair. This is an under statement. I have a full grown collie shepard mix who sheds frequently. This vacuum does an outstanding job of picking up the hair and also the dirt she tracks in. The infrared dirt sensor is a true blessing. It lets you know how dirty the area is with a red light, then the motor kicks up a notch, and you just keep vacuuming until the light turns green. (Even though the motor increases it's power, the noise factor hardly changes at all. Very quiet) Heavy traffic areas have been revitalized and the nap of the carpet has been lifted. The attachments are easy to use and the hose is already attached to the suction area so all you have to do is push a button to switch to suction. No more hassel with attaching that hose. The convenience of selecting the power for use on bare floors is also very good. I use it on my wood floors with great results. You won't be sorry with this product, infact, you'll wonder why you waited so long. I know I did!"

"After shopping around, my wife and I bought this Kenmore Progressive vacuum cleaner based on its top ranking from Consumer Reports and we have been thrilled. It's a better performer than more expensive Dyson and Oreck models and a much better value, too. We've been in our new house for over five years and this vacuum cleaner has made the carpet look like new. High-traffic areas have been lifted and restored to the condition they were in when we moved in, and every time we use our vacuum the carpet looks better still. The Intelli-Clean feature self-adjusts to heavier traffic areas and boosts the power when needed, so there's no need to change settings yourself. I also appreciate the Gentle setting for our hardwood floor area and the Suction Tools setting for directing the air flow through the hose. Our old vacuum tended to mark the walls and furniture if it came into contact with them, but this vacuum has soft rubber padding to prevent damage to the furniture or the vacuum itself. The accessories allow a great deal of flexibility for cleaning hard-to-reach places, such as alongside the refrigerator and behind our computer desks, while also storing conveniently on the vacuum itself. If you're even considering buying a new vacuum cleaner, I heartily recommend you stop by Sears and try this Kenmore Progressive. You'll save money over the heavily-advertised brands because you are paying for performance, not marketing. "We had new carpet installed, so we started researching vacuum cleaners. I was tired of the messy bagless one I had. With 3 dogs, you know it got a work out. I was looking for a quality product, fair price (you get what you pay for with the cheaper priced ones). This Kenmore model lives up to it's product description. Much quieter than my other one, powerful suction, and has a HEPA bag (think allergy deterrent). I especially like the extended handle and floor brush, to clean the bare floors. It almost glides across the new carpets, and really does a superb job. Now I almost enjoy vacuuming... Help me :)"

"I love this vacuum cleaner! (Sad that in my old age my life has come down to being excited about a vacuum cleaner. LOL!) Intelliclean system is amazing. I couldn't believe how what I thought was clean by passing over it a couple of times with my old vacuum wasn't really clean. I will admit that it takes me a LOT longer to vacuum now, because I am cleaning until I get a "green light" on everything. That said, we do have a cat that sheds. The attachments are very easy to use and connect. However, I do agree with many of the previous comments about the ability to do edges. It absolutely will NOT pick up things by the edges/baseboards. I always have to use the attachment to do that. That's kind of annoying. Also, I like the beltless system (after having to replace MANY belts on previous vacuums). BUT...I think that is what makes this somewhat hard to push. It's very heavy and you really work up a sweat pushing it around the house. So...Summary--It is by far the best vacuum I've ever owned. PROS: lights that tells you when areas are clean, easy to use attachments, cleaning ability, ability to do wood floors, VERY long cord CONS: doesn't do edges very well, heavy, takes a lot of elbow grease to push, two of the attachments don't fit on the vacuum itself so you have to store them somewhere in yoru house and hope they don't get lost, no retractable cord"

"I purchased the Kenmore Progressive with Intelli-Clean System and it exceeds my expectations! The dirt sensor was a surprise in that many areas of my carpet were "red" areas that needed extensive vacuuming to get clean. After vacuuming the whole house twice I now see the green light and my already bag needs to be changed. That says a lot about the cleaning power of my Oreck and old Hoover. Consumer Reports is right, this is a great value in a vacuum. I also like the ease of changing the bag, the HEPA filter and the tools attchments, especially the stair wand. Glad I researched before I bought."

"I bought this vacuum cleaner in January of '09 after researching online at consumer reports and other sources and after much internal debate. I was initially very impressed with this vacuum cleaner but wanted to wait a few months before reviewing. After 4 months, I am still very impressed with the way this vacuum cleaner performs on both carpet and ceramic tile. The attachments also work very well. We live in Florida, at the beach, and have 2 great danes that stay in the house 90% of the time. Although we keep the 2 danes clean, you can imagine the amount of hair, dander, and general sand that is brought into the house. That's where the 'fun' of this vacuum cleaner has come in... the sensor is amazing and it absolutely works. I can vacuum every day and the sensor can pick up the favorite spot where the 'boys' lay on the carpet while other areas will still show green for clean. The carpets and floors actually look and smell cleaner after I vacuum. The special attachment for tile and wood floors works great! I previously owned a Eureka Boss vacuum and was considering buying another one - it was cheaper than this Kenmore brand and did an ok job - I thought. I'm so glad I bought the Kenmore. This is a sturdy machine; some reviews in the past have indicated that the attachment hose has cheap plastic attachment parts? I have had no problem with this and just take care not to force anything. I also purchased the extended 3 year warranty - just in case there are any problems. One word of caution, the agitator is very aggressive - I would recommend starting off vacuuming at the highest carpet level to make sure it does not snag any of your carpet. I had this happen on the mid level setting so I have it set at the highest level now or just use the 'gentle' setting since I vacuum quite often. If you are teetering between this and another model,I whole heartedly recommend this vacuum."

"Our old vacuum worked well, but the self propell function quit working. I misread the info on this and thought it had the same function, but it doesn't. You have to use your own power to move it. But, it works well. When I used it for the first time it had all green lights. When I got to the area near the hall and breakfast nook the light turned red and I could hear the dirt being sucked in. I have now turned it over to the house cleaners. After their first use they said it worked fine."

Huge Disappointment,May 17, 2009

"I purchased this vacuum because it seemed like it had everything I could possibly want. Plus, I felt I couldn't go wrong with its #1 rating from a consumer magazine. However, here are the problems:
1. Extremely poor edge cleaning - I assumed that a vacuum at this price point would have a feature that my old $45 vacuum had. The Kenmore doesn't even get close to any edges because of the beltless direct drive. This means you will have to rely on the tools to do edges every time you vacuum a room.
2. Tools/attachments are poorly made - The tools are made of a very soft plastic that dents and scratches easily. If I wanted to, I could bend the crevice tool in half. Plus, you have to be very careful not to rub off the nubs that hold the telescoping wand to the hose. Speaking of the telescoping wand, it doesn't stay in the "locked" position.
3. Carpet fibers clogged up the agitator - I don't know why this happened, but even my $45 vacuum I had before never clogged with carpet fibers.
There are some positives though. 1) the motor was quiet 2) the electronic controls were convenient 3) the long cord was nice
I had the vacuum for only a week and returned it to Sears expressing my disappointment. They gladly took it back and I exchanged it for a Hoover Windtunnel that I like much better. I'm glad I returned it because I didn't want to keep something I wasn't satisfied with."

"With the intelligent dirt sensing feature I know I'm getting my floor cleaned and not just putting lines on the floor. This is great for people with allergies as it really tells you where you need to spend more time vacuuming to collect all the dirt. The notification lights actually make vacuuming fun like back when you were a kid and had the toy vacuum's that lit up when you used them only now the goal is to get a green light so you know your floor is dirt free. I received this vacuum as a gift and I'm so happy about the gift givers choice in this model. This is a great vacuum I recommend it to my friends and family."

"I too read the Consumers Reports and choose to purchase this Kenmore. My first one. I have purchased Rainbows, Hoovers. It worked fine for the most part, until the motor won't engage the brush therefore usless. So, I am back with my Hoover while the Kenmore is in for repair. I have had the cleaner for two years. This has never happen to me before on other vacuums. Probably won't buy another one. Hope this repair cost isn't the price of a new vacuum!!!!"

"My girlfriend and I recently replaced our old Eureka with this model and couldn't be happier. The is a very powerful motor and does actually make our carpet stand up like new again.
We also like the car attachment, which we also use for our poker table and other furniture. The other attachments are quite satisfactory as well.
We had one issue though, but resolved it after some experience. The LED indicator lights stayed on across all dirt levels. We followed the instructions to clean the LED indicator in the base of the vacuum, but it does take several tries with a damp cloth to get this clean enough to correct this issue.
Overall great vacuum cleaner at a much better price than a Dyson. Does the same or better job cleaning."

"I bought this vacuum after extensive research and reviews from friends and family. I have had it a month and it has made a huge difference in my home. My husband and I both have bad allergies and with this vacuum I don't think they are as bad anymore! We have a cat - and he sheds soooo much. It gets deep down to get all that fur that my old vacuum left behind. I used to use a dirt devil - I have never spent more than $40 on a vacuum before - so this was a HUGE investment for me. I am so glad that I decided to get this."

"I needed to replace a Kenmore Progressive that was less than five years old. I always use Consumer Reports but this time they let me down. One of the other reviewers said she could feel dirt hitting her feet the whole time. She was right! I have alot of hard floors and all the vac did was blow the dirt away from it. After talking to salesman when returning that issue is because the filter system is on the back and not the front. Therefore when it is tilted back while vaccuming the air blows the dirt around and away from you. Can only assume it's doing the same on carpets. It is heavy and the attachments are a pain. Not to mention they all don't fit on machine. Not easy to switch between options. Look at Hoover Convertible. Love it so far..."

"We have had the Kenmore for a couple of weeks now. We got it to replace a Dyson that was about 3 years old. The Kenmore is so much better than the the old vacuum it is amazing. I love the Intelliclean feature as it helps me to keep cleaning in one place until I get a green light. The suction power is great and I like not having a belt to loosen on the beater brush. We don't have any indoor pets but with 5 kids to clean up after we have plenty of messes to keep this vacuum busy."

"I had a Kenmore Progressive upright vacuum for 10 years and it simply wore out. Specifically, the belts. I kept changing them and they kept smelling. I bought a cheap replacement, used it twice and came back to Kenmore. The fact that his vac has no belts was a huge selling point to me. And its bagged! NO MESS! I love the extra bare floor attachment and use it often. The intelliclean system is a neat feature. Its lighter than my previous Kenmore, and quieter, too! LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT! Sad that a vacuum can bring such joy but for one who is not the best housekeeper, I actually enjoy using this!!! Great vacuum at a great price! I bought it on sale at $249."

Awesome, BUT buy the protection plan,March 11, 2009

"I purchased this model 2 years ago. The only complaint I had was the suction hose for would come undone easily. Annoying, but not a huge deal, I would prefer a rigid/metal tube for the end where the suction tools are inserted. BUT then this month the motor blew. So I would buy the master protection with it. I like the vacuum so much I bought another, even with the motor blow, I couldn't find one I liked better. I brought home some $800 machines and tried them, overall not as good of suction and neither would roll easily from bare floor to a carpet without stopping and adjusting. So we are having the motor replaced and will put the old one in the basement and our new one will be upstairs. I do vacuum every other day with a dog and toddler in the house. But still, I would have liked longer than two years before needing to replace a motor."
