"This vacuum is amazing! I have 3 pets- including a huge Lab that should be bald by now with as much hair as he sheds. I also have a new baby who is crawling around on the floor. I needed something that would suck up all the pet hair. I bought this vacuum yesterday and its AMAZING! I wish I'd have known- I would have bought this months ago. I love the dirt sensor on it. I was horrified to see how much dirt it was sucking up. YUCK! I've vacuumed the whole house 3 times already. This is hands down the best vacuum I've ever used. My mom and sister are now buying one too. Consumer Reports rated this #1 for a reason."

5 Indoor Cats & 1 Dog - This Vac Gets The Hair, November 24, 2006
By psdphx from Southwest Utah

"Love this Progressive Intelliclean vac!!! I've owned Oreck, Hoover Bagless Wind Tunnel and many others and this Kenmore beats them all. I "tried" the Dyson ... no thanks, I was not impressed. After the Dyson disappointment, I checked Consumer Reports and learned about this highest rated Kenmore Progressive. I returned the Dyson the day after I purchased it and then went directly to Sears and got this machine for $200 less. I really like the Intelliclean lights (optics). The first time I used it I wondered if the light would ever go green to indicate there was no more dirt coming into the vac - when it did go green I realized just how much dirt had remained in the carpet after using the Wind Tunnel :-( It works great on both carpet and tile. The 3 level suction is great to use when vac'ing throw rugs, etc!! The suction via the hand tools is also super. The machine is well built (Dyson was cheap plastic) and has a long, heavy duty hose for the hand tools. The power cord is long so no need to change plug for other rooms. Quick and easy handle assembly (not so with Wind Tunnel). Another super feature is this machine does not have belts that wear out and require changing!!! With 6 animals in the house, I must vac 3-4 times a week. The bagless Wind Tunnel was a major hassle to clean "before" I could even vac - it has a terrible design and I had to clean the filters every time I used the machine. I'm back to a bag and now understand the bag is "part of the filter" system!! If you can go into a Sears store to make this purchase, do so!! The information provided by the friendly sales woman was very valuable and helpful. And to the one comment about it not having a bag ... it does come with a non-reusable, cloth bag, so the missing bag was a factory oversight. This is a great machine and I highly recommend it!!!"

"I would highly recommend this vacuum. I have 2 dogs and 2 cats and ALOT of hair talk about suction this vacuum just goes to town. The floor looks and feels great when you are finished. This vacuum does have GREAT power and easy to use features at a cost efficient price. Move over DYSON because the competition is right here. Very pleased with our decision to purchase this vacuum. Not to mention the GREAT reviews consumer reports have given it. Also this vacuum is unbelievably QUIET !!! I have 3 children and a very hectic schedule so nothing like talking on the phone and vacuuming at the same time so great to multitask. Plus I have never owned a vacuum where you can actually have a conversation on the phone or with someone else and hear them !!!!! Thank You and Good Luck you can't go wrong with this one !!!!"

Sweet Machine!, October 16, 2006
By Jacob from St. Paul, MN

"Why spend $500+ on a Dyson so you can be part of the pop-culture icon when this mad machine will do the job even better (as rated by consumer reports).

Bought one this weekend. So easy to put together. Collects the dirt, collects the cat hair on the couch, even works on the cat! (No really, I did - it's got this cool low-suction setting you can use with the hand tool and I vacuumed the cat. Surprisingly, he didn't seem to object).

Anyway, after having lousy vacuums for most of my life, I was really excited to actually vacuum. And it was half the cost of some of the other ones out there, and works even better. Can't go wrong!

Love IT, September 8, 2009
By Anonymous from Cameron, NC

"I love this vacuum! I got rid of a Rainbow when I got this vacuum because this one does a much, much, much better job! Trying to talk my husband into giving the old one to our son so I can get a new one! Not that the old one doesn't work, even though it is 2 years old. I just love it!"

BestbyFar, August 4, 2009
By LuvsgoodealLynn from Long Island,NY

"Like so many,I have tried numerous vacuums, both with and without bags-Eureka The Boss & the Hoover Windtunnel bagless. Both of these had horrible pickup ability. My husband and I use Consumer Reports frequently for purchases and when the Windtunnel died it was the time to utilize its' info. I had heard that this Kenmore was rated very well and figured it was time to give it a try. To my absolute delight, this is by far THE BEST VACUUM I have owned. It does what a vacuum should-picks up the dirt, pet hair, etc. and leaves the nap on the carpet refreshed and not 'trampled.'
The feature of the lights to indicate the completed cleanliness of an area is a great one (from red to green when clean). To change from carpet to tile floors requires only the touch of a button. The attached hose also has great suction, something else my past vacuums never had. Needless to say,I absolutely LOVE this vacuum and will gladly 'spread the word'!

Kenmore Progressive Vacuum is Excellent, July 27, 2009
By MaKenna from Winchester, TN

"I just purchased my vacuum yesterday and I LOVE IT. I have had the dyson and didn't like it at all! Sales person at Sears was wonderful and helped me make my decision. For the cost and for what it does accomplish is unbeatable.
I have a cat in the house and the attachment picks up the hair effortlessly off the couch and I too never thought the green light would come on. I didn't realize how dirty the carpets were even though they appeared clean to your eye.
I love the fact there are no belts to change ever! I like the changeable features from hard wood to carpet with the click of a button~~ Also very quiet for a vacuum. LOVE IT!!!!!
Absolutely love this vacuum and would highly recommend it to anyone! Thanks Kenmore for creating a wonderful vacuum! :) Signed very satisfied customer.

Major Disappointment, July 24, 2009
By vikings1 from Tennessee

"I used to own the previous model of the Kenmoore Progessive and was content with it for 7 years until the engine overheated and died. I figured the new one would be just as good and have come to find out the hard way just how horrible this new model is. Within 4 months of owning it I've had to replace the extension piece due to the plastic lock braking off and now the motorized stair cleaner (Handi-Mate Jr.) device has stopped working. I took it apart and cleaned it after 7 months of use and it still won't work. I'm bringing the entire vacuum back to the store because I can't handle dealing with a brand new vacuum breaking down 2 times within 7 months. Obviously Consumer Reports does not realize the short longevity of this cheap vacuum."

Don't buy this vacuum, July 22, 2009
By 2crazykids from Pennsylvania

"I bought this vacuum because it was a Consumer Report's recommended buy- Ha!!! I have had it for 16 months and it is now in the repair shop in need of a new motor to the tune of $116.00!!! I might understand if we didn't take care of it or had lots of shedding animals but we did take care of it and we don't have pets. I wouldn't recommend this vacuum to anyone. Spend the extra money and get a vacuum with a better warranty. It's been a costly lessons for us!"

So heavy and difficult to push, June 27, 2009
By CMF77 from Bostin, MA

"I hate this vacuum! It is extremely heavy and at times, I cannot push it. I am young and in great shape and vacuuming the rugs is the most laborious activity due to the heaviness of this product. If you are vacuuming over an area that is really dusty and dirty, the machine suddenly feels like it is 100 lbs and I have to throw all of my weights against it for it to move. I also think the tubing for the attachments is too short. Often the vacuum will topple over as you are using an attachment of you have to strain your back to get the job done. I would not recommend this to anyone."

I'm impressed, June 26, 2009
By Luckaduck from Tampa, Fl

"Wow, when I brought my Kenmore Progressive vacuum home, I was amazed. It picked up so much that a runner that I normally have to use a sticky lint roller on, was perfectly clean without it. It also fluffed up my carpet, making it look newer and better."

Great purchase!, June 6, 2009

Great vacuum but..., May 26, 2009
By Paul79 from Washington

"This is a long use review. We have had this vacuum for three years. I love the vacuum except for one design flaw. The attachment wand has two plastic nipples that lock the wand into the main hose. The plastic nipples broke off after two years with just normal use. Now the wand will not stay attached to the main hose. Much harder to use the attachments now.

I also recommend the cloth bags. They hold more stuff and breath better than the paper bags. They cost more however.

One other point. This vacuum is not self propelled. My wife finds it hard to push around. Since I do the vacuum chore, it's not a problem for me.

OK, one final point. The inteli-clean feature is a great feature that really works. I will never go back to those old manual vacuums. This feature takes the guess work out of "is it clean?"

Design flaws/omissions, May 19, 2009
By Chores from Albuquerque, NM

"The little brush attachment lost its bristle in <100 uses. Store doesn't carry replacements. Must order at Sear parts-of course the parts search engine did not show the vacuum, parts or anything even when model number entered.
Stair brush runs off suction and has no power. Brush stops frequently Squeals.
Adding a horizontal handle at the base of the filter compartment would let you use the vacuum on stairs.

Can't get close to base molding because of brush design--trade off for direct motor drive feature. Hard to have both.

Door to bag compartment easily falls off when opening far enough to easily replace HEPA bag.

Difficult to lay down handle enough to get under raised furniture without front brush lifting up.

Vacuums well. Like the controls in the handle.

That said, don't like features of Dyson or hoover even more.

upright kenmore, May 9, 2009
By Braydensmom from Denton, TX

"I bought this vacuum about 6 months ago, and it is already broken. It never had very good suction and could not get into the corners. It didn't work well on hard floors- it just spit the dirt everywhere. The hose and tools constantly fall off and get in the way. Recently, the spinning brush stopped working. I tried to take the bottom off so I could fix the brush, but this vacuum definitely isn't ment to be taken apart. With most vaccums you can take the bottom off and replace the belt, but you cannot do that with this vacuum. I never could get the bottom off, and it was going to cost more to fix then the vacuum was worth. I was very disappointed with this product."

Love This Vacuum!, May 9, 2009
By einfl from Palm Coast, FL

"I have owned a Dyson, Kirby, and Hoover, and been unhappy with all of them. I saw this vacuum in Consumer Reports and decided to try it. This thing is amazing! It does a great job of picking up the dog hair and tracked in dirt, I don't have to bend down to the floor to rewind the cord, and the extra-long hose is great for reaching high corners. I never thought I would say that I love a vacuum, but this one has changed my mind."

Good vaccum, poor design, May 3, 2009
By Kiramom from MN

"I bought this machine 6 weeks ago. Yes, it cleans well, but the tools are poorly designed. All of the plastic tubes do not store with the machine. The tubes that fit the floor brush are not carried on the machine. I was setting up to vacuum on the first floor and had to run to the third floor to see the tubes had been left there. The tubes are designed with a tiny plastic nub in the slots where the tubes connect that will wear off quickly and do not work to keep the tubes connected.
The Handi-mate attachment for stair cleaning and furniture is designed to fail. My dog has long hair, which has wound itself around the axle of the brush and brought it to a complete stop. The users manual states that the attachment is not serviceable by the user. I have managed to take it apart several times to unwind the dog hair. But overall, the attachment loses power quickly and the brush stops revolving.

Not good for carpeted stairs or dusting, April 20, 2009
By REP44 from Terre Haute, IN

"I recommend this vacuum cleaner with two big reservations. The Kenmore Progressive 35922 upright vacuum cleaner is excellent for vacuuming carpet -- except carpeted stairs. The upright will not fit on stairs and the Handi-Mate Jr. that comes with the vacuum cleaner is worthless on carpeted stairs.

The vacuum cleaner does not come with, nor can you purchase, a dusting brush attachment. Dusting brush 52641 (now 5264) is listed on the List of Parts and Accessories Available for Purchase at Sears Stores and Parts and Repair Centers (list which comes with the vacuum cleaner) as being compatible with the Kenmore Progressive. However, I purchased the listed dusting brush and it will not fit on the vacuum cleaner in any way. I checked with the Sears parts department (by phone) and was told there is no dusting brush available for Kenmore Progressive 35922.

So, if you do not have carpeted stairs and a dusting brush is not important to you, a Kenmore Progressive 35922 could well be what you are looking for.

So Far So Good, April 19, 2009
By Jymbo from San Antonio, Tx

"Take this review with a grain of salt at first. We have only purchased this less than a week ago after the Great Vacuum Search of '09. We paid less than was shown on this site - they were on a really good sale.

To Set up - I have done sooooo much research these last 2 weeks on every brand and mfr and even reviews such as these and from Consumer Reports as well and testing them in person. Asking multiple repair shops who they get more in to repair and who they recommend etc. You would be surprised at the number of Hoovers and Dysons I saw in for repair. If I had had the money for a Riccar we would have one now... but after all was said and done we bought this model and are so far delighted with its performance.
We have (currently) 8 large dogs that believe shedding is their birthright and 3 cats ...OH and we just had a rainstorm that made it muddy for a day or two. Our floors are multi - we have carpet, wood floors and area rugs on some areas.

Pros - bristles are firmer than most mass produced models (except 4 riccar) and on a heavy roller to help them dig deep. Good suction until bag becomes filled dust (it picked up alll the stuff our old vacuum missed so not a big surprise). We expect to go through a few bags this first week. Good long cord. Not nearly as loud as vacuums we have had the previous 2 times. Doesn't scare the dogs, the last 2 vacs they were running for the hills. Vacuum hose stretches nicely. Enough power right now that it actually feels like a self propelled vacuum.

Cons - It is a bit heavy (I blew out my shoulder in the gym 3 weeks ago- I am a world-class powerlifter - so when I say it is a bit heavy...).
On board tool selection is okayyyy but we are going to purchase the floor cleaners etc. The controls for stopping the roller brush for carpet to floor transition and the control to lower the cleaner is not intuitive and requires a bit of mental retraining. (I have so far kept hitting the roller bar control to get the vacuum to tilt back and then I tilt the whole thing accidentally). Bare wood floor performance is okay but I think that is why we need to buy 2 additional attachments that are not included.

It was good enough in its performance that my wife who vowed she would NEVER buy another thing from Sears 20 years ago and has stuck to it until now, actually encouraged the purchase. WOW. But I will re-write my review in 6 months and give any further relevant info if there is any.

Recommendation - it is a bagged vacuum so change bags frequently if you have pets. You will hear the difference in motor pitch when it is struggling. Buy the extended warranty and have it serviced and this just might last longer than those 1 year disposable vacuums we consumers have been suckered into.
