Stood up to abuse,July 25, 2009
By E36Gurufrom New Jersey
"I am giving this 4 stars instead of 5 simply because I only used this for one job so far, and to get that 5th star I woudl need to see it last years.
I bought this today for a job that was simply abuse of the tool. I needed to press a bushing in a control arm, which is a job that really should be done with a hydrualic press that costs hundreds. I was able to abuse this vise and use it as a press to install bushings on both my control arms.
In order to do this, I had to use a three foot lead pipe as a cheater bar to get extra leverage, which is clearly more force than the tool is intended for. I had to stand on the vise and use my legs too. It stood up to that abuse just fine, and if it only lasts this one job it was still worth it.
The thing about online reviews is when people are dissatisfied with their product, they almost certainly come write a review -- but when peopl are satisfied, they finish the job and call it a day and rarely write reviews."

Piece of junk,February 10, 2009
By jpritts00from Cherokee, IA
"Got this vise for Christmas, used it twice. I put a heavy duty bolt with lock nut on it in the vise and tightened it down. First the jaw snapped in half so I moved the bolt to the other half for a good grip, this time it held until I started to pull on the breaker bar. After a couple of tugs on the breaker bar, the vise actually broke in half! I guess I am closer to superman than I thought. I would never recommend this product to any of my friends and will be looking for a better quality product."

Poor Jaws,October 20, 2008
By PhilWfrom Phoenix, Arizona
"I recently bought this vise on sale and found out why it was on sale. The first time I clamped a piece of steel in the jaws one of them broke at the fastener hole. I considered looking for a new set of jaw plates from Sears but decided I would only get the same quality again. I made a new set from some that were similar from Grainger. I have always had a very high opinion of Craftsman tools for their price, I am however very disapointed with this one."

Sears/K-Mart,October 2, 2008
By lookingforquality17from Honolulu, HI
"I own one of these and have used it a total of 6 times over a period of a year. I had the need to use it recently and put a fitting in it, tightened it down and used a wrench to unscrew a reducer bushing from it when one of the jaw plates broke. I went to Sears (K-Mart) to by another set of jaws...they don't have one but offered to sell me a new one. I declined and asked for the manager. He told me that I could go to the Sears (K-Mart) parts store that "stocks parts for everything Sears (K-Mart) sells. I went there and had a non-responsive counter-person attempt to look-up my vise and couldn't find it as there were like 75 options, although there are only 3 options when you buy it. She then found some part that may or may not have been it and told me that the price would be over $35.00 for the very small set of jaws and that they didn't stock them and that if I ordered it and it was the wrong part that it wouldn't be refundable. I said " Thank you for your time!" I will never buy a Sears (K-Mart) tool again, period!!!"

6" bench vise,February 23, 2008
By bookmanfrom Eastern NM
"I bought the vise new, used sparingly less than six months. Broke the jaw face with little pressure applied. The jaw face appears to be made from poor quality pot metal. I will be buying my tools elsewhere in the future. Poor quality and lack of replacement parts is the biggest problem."

"I've had Craftsman tools for years, but after this vice, no more. The part that the screw threads into stripped after a year, and am not able to find replacement parts. I thought I might be able to fix it with acme threaded nut, but it's not standard acme threads. Guess it goes in the dumpster."

"This is a home vice for light jobs. If you want a great vice buy the Wilton. It will cost you $450 but for the home shop and for the money this is a good vice. It seems like the other reviews thought they where going to get a Wilton vice for $69. I would compare this vice to another pair of hands, when you need to hold something it will come in handy but its not going to take a lot of abuse (you don't want to hit it with a 10lb. sledge hammer) I think the other reviewers saw craftsman name and thought they would get top of the line vice, which I can understand but this is a light duty vice. Remember Craftsman has many different grades or levels of tools."

"Bought this vice for my father in-law two years ago for Christmas. He has used it very lightly, since he has two severed rotator cuffs. I have alot of craftsman tools, and used to enjoy their quality and replacement value. However, that appears to be no more. At least they post these reviews, so I didn't waste any more time looking. This vice will go in the trash as well as other reviews have stated."

"I have been buying Craftsman products for more than 30 years. While Sears has had some ups and some downs, both in workmanship and value on their products. I would place this vise in the super value level. A good 6" vise will in most cases cost in the neighbor of of $150 and up. So when I ordered this vise I wasn't expecting much. To my supprise, I recieved a "very good" vise, considering what I paid for it. Smooth operation, tight fiting jaws, and good tight hold. It is not a Wilton or Snap On, but there is a big differance in what you pay. If you are a homeowner and just need a "good" vise for your shop, this is the one to get"

"I got this for Christmas 2 years ago. One of the jaw pieces broke almost immediately and after seeing the other reviews, it appears I'm not alone. The material they used for them is incredibly soft and weak. I can't get the broken one off because the screw is stripped too. Very disappointing for the Craftsman name. After procrastinating for over 2 years, I finally went to a Sears store and it says right on the box "Replacable jaws" so I asked for help and got none. Was told to go to Sears.com or a call a local warehouse. I made it online today and after reading the previous reviews, it's going in the trash."

"I bought this vice a little over a year ago. As a home owner who uses the vice occasionally, it been okay but today I broke one of the replaceable jaw faces, one of the two smal metal pieces that are smooth on one side and serrated on the other, held on by screws. It is a consumable part, no problem, I figured I'd just replace it. Called for a parts quote, $41.00 !!! I was told it was so high because it was basically the main part of the vice. Excuse me but total weight of the consumable part is less than a pound on a vice that weights 35-40 lbs. The whole vice cost $69.00. What a complete ripoff. The replaceable face looks like it was made from pot metal, no joke. Will not be buying another of these cheap vices from Sears. Also, don't be fooled, just cause it says Craftsman on it doesn't mean it comes with a lifetime warranty."

"I own this vise and it has done what I expect of it. The fact it is made in China is not thrilling but no one makes them here any more. Sears has always taken care of lifetime warranties for me and I get free replacement if it fails. No parts just replace it."

"I bought this six inch vice a year ago. In one year I had the bolt come loose under the base, and one of the reversable jaws broke and I've been unable to get replacements. what good is a vice, which if you read under the base it's stamped "made in china" if you cant get replacement parts for it."
